Pownce - Send stuff to your friends
For a while now people have been talking and wondering about Kevin Rose's latest venture, rumoured to be some sort of instant messenger. A collaboration of Leah Culver, Daniel Burka, Kevin Rose and Shawn Allen, today Pownce has been partially opened to the public.
Pownce is a way to send messages, files, links, and events to your friends. You'll create a network of the people you know and then you can share stuff with all of them, just a few of them, or even just one other person really fast.
The site is invite only, but non-registered users can still browse profiles to get a taste of what it is. Here's Kevin's profile, or even Dr Tiki's! There is also a downloadable application, running on Adobe AIR, for quick desktop access. The application is not required, you can still update via the website.
My ViewNow, let's get one thing straight. I like the idea, I think it is something I would definately use. That said, isn't this just networked tumblelogs? With a bit more control of course. I wonder if anything like this has been done before. I know we have things like Twitter, but that's a bit basic, it just feels odd that this concept is only brought to life now.
I don't know, either way I am signed up for an invite (via the homepage) and I can't wait to check this out a little more. Maybe it is more than what I think...
