Welcome to akamike v2
Finally, the time has come for me to unveil akamike v2. I've been using the same old design for over a year now and wanted a change. After much delay my new look is here.
This design is the result of much thought after many failed attempts to create a place to represent me. While it's not as great as the work of say Elliot Jay Stocks, I think it's pretty damn good. I am very pleased with the end product and I am proud to say this is what I wanted.
The first thing you'll notice about the design is it's not as badly WEB 2.0 as the old design. I've worked on the colours and they are now a bit more reserved. The logo, which is simple and initially started as just a favicon, now gives me some form of identification. The typography is better, the layout is better, it's just much better than what I had before.
As I said, this is the outcome of several failed attempts. It's not that I felt that those attempts were bad, I just didn't feel that they represented me well enough. However, I have learned a lot from my experiments and I plan to tweak the ideas into free themes. I'm not going to set deadlines, but they will come (until then, why not try out In The Rough?).
More than just the look has changed here at akamike. The mark-up is much better, the sections have been revised and there are new features like the twitter feed and use of tagging. I'm now also fully up-to-date with Wordpress, despite disliking the admin panel.
There is some missing content, such as my new about page, which I will be filling in over the next few days. Post categories have been reset so I can properly recategorize them and tags are now in use, so I'll be going through all my previous posts to tag them up.
For posterity, here is a screenshot of the old akamike:
Let me know what you think of the new look in the comments! Enjoy :)
Very nice mike. Love the new design. Keep up the good work.
Oooh. Awesome. I love the new design, Mike. I've been checking back every day to see if it had been done! lol
Very nice. I love the navigation. It's a major, major improvement on your previous design. You've done well.
One suggestion, if I may, for the front page. Where you have recent posts, it's hard to tell them apart. They just all look like one jumble. You might want to do something about that to seperate them a bit. But besides that, everything is sweet. :)
Liking the new design a lot. The navigation is a huge improvement, and the use of the dark grey in the header / side bar is a nice touch. The little rainbow strips at the top and bottom are nice too - gives an extra splash of color to add more variety.
Great design :)
Thanks everyone :)
@Nyssa: You're not the only one who thinks that, Sash also pointed this out to me. I'll have a play with some ideas and get it sorted, thanks :)
Ooh I really like this new design, its so cool and original!
I really like the new design Mike. Especially the new navigation. The home icon rollover is a very nice little touch too.
Much better :D
Looks great mike! I really like the nav :)
MIKE this is amazing ;_________;
Thanks for the comments, glad this has been well received :)
Yeah I like this design and I really love the flair that the rainbow lines at the top and bottom add. The designery circles in the background are nice, and the little bit of noise you added really helps make the main container pop out.
My only real complaint is that the only cue that the buttons at the top are buttons and that you can click them is the mouse pointer changing. Perhaps add a simple onClick() to switch it to a different image?
But yeah, other than that issue, I really like the design. The color scheme is nice, the fonts are used well, and I really like the brackets next to comments, they add a sort of nice, stylish effect.
Thanks Iaman. In regards to the active/focus state of navigation on the site, I am actually experimenting with some things right now which will be applied to the site with an article about it. :)
