The Golden Compass

Wow, I only just found out about it from Sasha, but apparently there is a movie adaptation of "Northern Lights" by Philip Pullman (known as "The Golden Compass" in the US). It's slotted for a Decemeber 2007 release, and it looks pretty good. Some of the characters don't seem quite as I had imagined them, but I suppose it's been a while since I read it. I'm re-reading it now to remind myself.

When Lyra's friend Roger disappears, she and her daemon, Pantalaimon, determine to find him. The ensuing quest leads them to the bleak splendour of the North, where armoured bears rule the ice and witch-queens fly through the frozen skies - and where a team of scientists is conducting experiments too horrible to be spoken about.

Lyra overcomes these strange terrors, only to find something yet more perilous waiting for her - something with concequences which may even reach beyond the Northern Lights...

There's info about the movie on Wikipedia and on the official site. I really enjoyed the triology so I hope these movies are done well. I'll probably do a follow up to this post to give the book a better review, once I have read it again, and then once more when I see the movie. Until then, pick it up, read it and see for yourself!

I heard about it more in a way "whoa watch out Gharry Potter" than it being a genuine, good book. You seem as if you like it for what it is, and that's exponentially better than HARRY POTTER CHALLENGER
